After your hotel pick up, we venture towards the Pacific Coast on a less-travelled road through the Coastal Mountain range called the “Cuesta La Dormida” (Sleepy Passage) reaching 4,000 feet above sea level and offering spectacular views of the Andes Mountains. (Departures from Santiago only). Here you will see the famed Chilean Wine Palm. Our descent to the coast will continue through small rural towns nestled between gently rolling hills and avocado plantations until reaching the upscale seaside resort of Papudo.  Here we will catch our first glimpse of the Chilean coastline.  We continue on to another exclusive resort town, Zapallar, where you will have an option to take a private boat ride to Cachagua Island, more commonly known as “Penguin Island” named after the penguin colony that inhabits the island year-round.  We will then drive to the town of Cachagua where we will stroll along a beautiful walkway carved into the rocky coastline.  We will be a stone’s throw from “Penguin Island” and may even be able to catch a glimpse of a penguin or two using binoculars.  So if you did not take the boat tour this will be another opportunity to spot a penguin on the tour.  Afterwards, we travel further along the coastline on the “Ruta del Pacífico” (Pacific Highway) to the fishing village of Horcón often referred to as the “hippie hotspot” of the Central Coast.  The quaint town gets its eclectic reputation from the local fishermen and artisans. A road leads toward the main cove, lined with rows of colorful fishing boats and artists who set up shop on the beach selling an array of local crafts.  There you will find the “Puente de los Deseos” (Bridge of Wishes), which is a bridge made of wood decorated with colorful fabric straps where people write their wishes. We will make our last stop in the peninsula port of Quintero at “La Cueva del Pirata” (The Pirate’s Cave).  The legend goes that from this spot three pirates under the command of another pirate named “Bluebeard” assaulted ships that passed along the Chilean coast.  They hid their treasures in tunnels deep within the cave and stood guard day and night.  Today, only the entrance to the cave is accessible.  Locals say, though, that there are still hidden treasures buried deep within the cave and the souls of the pirates are still guarding their loot. Here, you can have lunch at a scenic restaurant overlooking the mighty Pacific.  This tour is a “must do” for anyone wanting to see the best of Chile’s Central Coast!
